Cat Facts

Did you know that CATS have saved MILLIONS of people's LIVES and JOBS? Cats have saved tons of food too. . . . food intended to feed millions of people.

Cats help stop the plaque by controlling the mice population.

Bubonic plague and haunta virus is spread through fleas and feces of rodents. (In the dark ages, one third the population - over 27 million people - died in Europe because of bubonic plaque. People had hunted down cats almost to point of extinction.... There weren't enough cats left to kill the over-population of rats which spread disease.)

Cats save food by killing mice that eat or contaminate food (causing food poisoning.) And cats have saved jobs when they save food inventory for companies who employment depend on producing safe food products.

Cat Facts

In a careful study of feral cats, only 4% of cat diet consisted of birds.
90% birds ESCAPE cat attacks vs. 20% mice.
The cats ears are tuned into exact frequency of mice.
It's been proven that the better fed cats make the better mousers.

How to Have a Good Cat

I've condensed my philosophy of cat behavior into five simple rules:

  • Diet affects cat behavior. Feed a wide variety of food (canned, dry, homemade, leftovers.)
  • Exercise affects cat behavior. Train your cat to use his scratching post.
  • Adopt spayed or neutered, clawed cats only. Clawed cats need homes and are safer and cheaper to own. Do not declaw any cat.
  • When your cat is bad say “no!” Don’t say “no, Louie”. Use his name only when he is good. Do not spank your cat or squirt water on him.
  • Play with your cat everyday. Use cat toys, not your hands.

Notes

My basic premise regarding cat behavior :

Cats are like people. Our diet, exercise and environment (abuse, communication, heritage, etc.) affect both people and cat behavior.

Cat Diet/Food

Diet affects health & behavior. If we ate the same food, every meal, every day, us humans would not feel or act right either. Don't  feed cats dry food only or one food only.

I can tell you many stories of how mean, scared or sick cats improved and whose lives were saved - just by feeding a more sensible, balanced and wide-variety diet. (Add massage, steam and chicken broth, healing took little time for my foster cats.)

It's not natural for cats to eat dry food only. In the wild, cats eat only raw foods and seldom drink water. Living indoors only and eating only dry foods is not healthy. Please feed your cat wet food too! Table scraps can include chicken, turkey, lamb, vegetables, butter.

Do NOT feed your cat: pork, white flour products, sugar/substitutes, chocolate, canned tuna or dog food.

Some preservatives in dry food are suspect of causing behavior or kidney problems. Avoid feeding dry foods which contain these preservatives: ethoxyquin, BHA/BHT or propyl gallate. Ethoxyquin was originally developed as a weed killer, rubber hardener, pesticide & insecticide.

I say: "If you want a good cat, feed him good food." Higher quality cat foods are often cheaper in the long run: cat eats less, has better health and behavior and may not need to see the vet as often.

Outside Cats

Many cats with behavior problems get their lives extended or saved by being taken on supervised outdoor walks. Going outside stops or alleviates many cat behavior problems. Many peeing declawed cats and cats on verge of being taken to a shelter or euthanized lives are extended by going outside. Some cats DO adapt, and even like being kept indoors only, but not ALL cats can be kept indoors. In all my years of fostering cats, there are a few cats I've met that really don't like to go outside. For the most part cats love outdoors! Thousands of people train their cats to walk on lead (harnessed). I train my cats to stay in the yard and take walks on harness.

I have found that cats who go outside don't get bored or go 'crazy' as cats who are kept indoors only. Also, I don't have to spend as much time entertaining them. Outside is the best 'baby sitter' for cats - just as some people think TV is best "baby sitter" for children.  Cats who go outside get vitamin D from the sunshine, they maintain their coat by rolling in dirt and are better able to find their home should they accidentally get outside.

Details to my advice above are described in my book Cat Be Good

Declawing

Cats builds muscles in the chest, back, stomach, neck by scratching their post (a cat's  'workout gym'.)  The "exercise" of a declawed cat is compromised and diminished because he is unable to grip and pull/work the same muscles as clawed cats. His ability to be a good listener may be side tracked with phantom limb pain and stress of having no fingers/toes.
